You don't know what you don't know. This is especially true when starting your first large-scale remodel. Remodeling can be a long and stressful process, but by understanding what to expect, you can ensure things go as smoothly as possible.

The end goal is a home you can love for years to come. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind to get you to the end result faster:

Start with a plan, but know it’s going to change.

Arguably, the first thing to know about any renovation or remodel is nothing goes completely as planned. It's important to be prepared for the complexities and costs involved.

Budgeting for a large remodel or renovation can be tricky. It’s important to be prepared for the possibility that costs might exceed your initial estimate. This is especially true when remodeling older homes because of the unknown.

Delays are also common and not something you can easily control. By planning for these potential setbacks, you can help manage your expectations and add some degree of ease to the process.

Remove yourself [and your things] from the home.

During major remodels and renovations, finding alternative living arrangements is often recommended and even necessary. The constant traffic of tradespeople, noise of power tools, and general disruption can be difficult to live in, especially if you have small children, pets or work from home.

You will also need to plan for the storage of your furnishings and belongings. For example, if your kitchen is being remodeled, setting up a temporary kitchenette in another part of the house can be a practical solution.

Remodels and renovations can be stressful. There will be moments when you feel overwhelmed. It's our job to find solutions. Projects often take longer than anticipated, with deficiencies—tasks that need to be completed or corrected—adding time to the timeline. Patience is key throughout the process.
