Our Top Tips to Help You Live Through Your Renovation this Year

Along with a renovation comes the pounding sounds of hammers, power tools & air compressors, lots of dust and the constant question of will this renovation ever end. But they are also life-changing and well worth the temporary inconvenience. I’m sharing tips for surviving & thriving when living through a renovation, because the end result is always worth the temporary disruption.

Tip #1: Set Expectations, but Stay Easygoing

The key to planning for a renovation is setting expectations. Asking questions like how long will it take, what rooms will be disrupted and what you will and won't have access to in the home are all questions that can help you best prepare for the weeks & months ahead. Typically, a dumpster & porta jon will be placed in your driveway & your garage will be taken over with items that need to be stored.

Tip #2: Create a Sanctuary & Remain Calm

You’ll want to designate a space in the home that remains neat, clean, and organized as a "sanctuary" from the dust and noise of the project. Will this location help maintain sanity? probably not but it will help. If your Kitchen is being remodeled, we recommend setting up a mini kitchenette in the basement or another space in the home so you can access to the daily necessities. Having a designated sink for the Contractors to use for clean up is also important.

Tip #3: Pack Properly, but Plan for Pro Cleaning

Everything in and near the rooms that are being renovated will need to be packed away or covered very carefully with heavy drop-cloths. Will dust get everywhere? Yes, its inevitable. Pack up all your items & valuables to ensure they remain safe.

Tip #4: Remember Daily Routines & Rituals

Routines are as important as ever when living in a construction zone. By maintaining normal daily routines, life will feel slightly less disrupted and your family will be able to better navigate the stress.

Tip #5: Document, but Don't Dwell on the Disruption

Homeowners should document and take pictures of the progress along the way, ask the pros questions anytime they arise, and embrace the inevitable chaos knowing it is short-lived and leading toward an end goal.

Someday you will be glad you have documentation of this crazy time. You will look back fondly at the time it took to create the beautiful home of your dreams and smile.

Planning ahead, asking lots of questions, and embracing the chaos while living through your renovation will help things go a little smoother. Remember to stay flexible and trust your team’s process to survive & thrive.
